MMA, or mixed martial arts, is a relatively new combat sport that was brought to public eye with the advent of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993. Mixed martial arts is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Now that the it is free of the over-regulations of the past, the sport is really taking off, especially at the local level.

What is the Point of MMA?

The sport is often called Ultimate Fighting after the top promotion in America, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The point of MMA is to bring together martial artists from different backgrounds to build a well-rounded, complete martial artist who is confident in fighting on the feet as well as on the ground.

MMA training is often split into the individual components of striking, wrestling, and submission grappling. In addition, you must work on your strength and conditioning. Because of the numerous demands, the best MMA training programs must be efficient. Generally, you will want to focus on the basics, the simple, most high percentage techniques such as the jab and cross. You need to ensure that you are training smart and resting as well, otherwise you will be unable to perform at your best.

You do not have to be a fighter, or want to become a fighter to train like one.  Some may equate MMA only with fighting, and not with the vast and diverse advantages it provides to those who study and train for it. So why should you get involved in a Mixed Martial Arts training program?

Reasons to Get Involved in MMA

  • Fitness – MMA training is guaranteed to improve your level of fitness. MMA fighters are some of the most superior, well-rounded, Olympic-caliber athletes of the day. Living the MMA lifestyle can therefore transform your body, along with your mind and spirit.
  • Confidence - The confidence built from training in MMA can translate into the office, your relationships, and wherever else you can use a self-assurance boost! You should even find yourself with increased leadership skills or an ability to conquer presentations just like you would during training. Your newfound confidence will also help deter any would-be attackers.
  • Self-defense - Studying MMA can greatly increase your level of preparedness in the face of a dangerous situation. With your knowledge of combative arts, you should confidently be prepared to defend yourself whenever you need to.
  • Community - Joining a group or team of individuals who are all there for each other keeps you on track with your training and will help you make some friends along the way.
  • Discipline - The discipline you develop from an MMA training program can be applied to the rest of your life, from enhancing your capacity to stick to a schedule, to strengthening your resolve, and to improve your diet.

This type of training is great for the body, and will help one to improve stamina and strength.  It has been proven by a number of researchers that individuals who practice any form of martial arts on a regular basis have higher levels of fitness and a stronger immune system compared to individuals who do not.

These training programs are also great for individuals suffering from innumerable health troubles like high cholesterol, cardiac or pulmonary issues, high blood pressure, difficulty breathing, poor circulation, and many others. Most importantly, through this experience you will be on a journey to find your true self and the connection between your mind, body, and spirit. You will learn more about yourself through every class, and find out what you are truly capable of.
